Legislation Alert: TAX RULES MAY CHANGE!

Legislation introduced by Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) and by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) and supported by the President’s Administration changes the rules relating to IRS treatment of independent contractors.

The definition of an independent contractor in these bills must be clarified to protect the freedom and flexibility you need as a self-employed and independent business owner, and businesses must have the clarity needed to support and utilize contractors.

Your opportunity to change minds is now while these bills (H.R. 3408, S. 2882) are in committee.

Call or write your legislators. Tell them your story. Educate your representatives who may not be familiar with how emerging technology has empowered home-based businesses like yours.

Tell them that in this new economy workforce, you decide when, where, how long and for whom you want to work.

Ask for equal treatment. In defining “independent contractor” for Federal tax purposes, ask that Internet-based freelance service providers—like you—be treated equally under the law as are other independent contractors, including direct sellers.

Small businesses are the engine for recovery and growth. In these challenging economic times, the certainty of your classification as an independent contractor is critical to grow your business and maintain your independence.

The N.E.W. definition we propose

WHO WE ARE

working at homeWe are a community of entrepreneurs and micro-business owners. We value freedom and flexibility. In fact our lives demand it. We choose work that sustains our lives rather than choosing a life that begins only after work.

We are working mothers, veterans, people with disabilities, caregivers, retirees, fathers and professionals. We thrive as a non-traditional workforce because we see work as opportunity not obligation.

We defy the barriers of economics, location and access by utilizing technology that enables us to work where, when and how we choose. We maximize opportunity by offering our services across multiple entities.

We are The New Economy Workforce--working smarter for our families, our communities and our planet. We are growing in numbers and in strength.

And we are independent.
